Have You or a Loved One Suffered a Burn Injury Due to Negligence?

The American Burn Association states there are approximately 1.1 million burn injuries each year just in the United States. Each of these injuries requires treatment. Out of these injuries, about 45,000 require serious treatments and hospitalization.  Another 4,500 victims die each year from these injuries.  Many burn injuries are a result of the negligence of another person.  These types of injuries can be from fires, car accidents, or defective products, as an example.

Degrees of Burns

Burns are classified as first, second, or third degree based off the severity and depth of the burn.  First degree burns affect only the outer layer of the skin.  The skin may be red and painful but has no blisters.  A second degree burn is where not only is the epidermis involved, but also the dermis- this also contains blistering of the skin.  Third degree burns destroy the first and second layers of the skin and could even damage the bone or tendons. Additionally, the effected area of a third degree burn typically appears to be very white in color.

Burn Injury Treatment

Treatment for serious burns can involve surgical removal of tissue.  A skin graft is sometimes necessary when damage is severe enough where it cannot heal.  A skin graft is taken from an unburned part of the body and put onto the injured area.  All of these procedures can cause serious burden on the finances of the injured or the family.
